The Technology Behind the Solar Air Heater
Our Solar Air Heater is a transpired solar collector (TSC) (also known as an unglazed transpired solar collector or uTSC). This is a proven technology that converts sunlight directly into hot air, without the use of water, glycol, or any other liquids.
Below, we explain exactly how it works, why it is so efficient, and which materials we use.
How does a transpired solar collector work?
The operation is astonishingly simple:
- The sun shines on a black-coated, perforated aluminium plate. The plate absorbs the solar energy and becomes hot.
- An energy-efficient fan draws the outside air through the microscopic perforations. The air sweeps across the heated plate and absorbs the heat.
- The heated air (40–50°C / 104–122°F) is blown directly into your room.
There is no glass in front of the plate, no pipes, and no pump. The air is both the heat carrier and the medium that enters your room. This makes the system low-maintenance, frost-proof, and incredibly reliable.
Why is this more efficient than a glazed collector?
A glazed (flat plate) collector gets hotter (up to 80°C / 176°F), but that is only true as long as the heat is trapped. As soon as you start distributing the warm air, the hot air leaves the collector, cold air rushes in, and the collector loses almost all its heat. Ultimately, you are left with very little usable energy.
Our TSC works differently: the fan continuously draws air straight through the plate. As a result, the plate gets slightly less hot (40–50°C), but there is virtually zero heat loss to the outside air. All captured solar energy is blown directly into your room as warm air.
The result: From a 2m² system, you get up to 1,000 Watts of usable heat into your room — often almost twice as much as a glazed collector of the same size. Less heat in the collector, more heat in your room.
Materials and construction
We manufacture the housing and mounting frame in-house. This means we have full control over quality and lifespan.
- Absorber: Black-coated, perforated aluminium plate — corrosion-resistant with a high absorption rate.
- Housing: HDPE, Aluminium, or Stainless Steel — depending on the application and environment (e.g., coastal areas).
- Fan: 20–30 Watt, optionally powered by a small solar panel (fully autonomous).
- Backdraft damper: Prevents cold drafts at night and when the system is idle.
- Filter: Insect and dust filter, easy to clean.
All components are resistant to UV, rain, wind, and frost. The system is designed for a long lifespan (25+ years), even in harsh weather conditions.
Proven technology
Transpired solar collectors have been used on an industrial scale for decades. Worldwide, more than 1 million square meters have been installed. Major multinationals such as FedEx, DHL, Ford, Toyota, and Walmart use these systems on their factories and distribution centers. Tata Steel (UK) supplies the special perforated plates.
What these companies have been doing for years to reduce their energy costs, Transpired Solar now brings to the private market. You benefit from technology that has proven itself in the toughest real-world conditions.
